Carving Out a Future Review Response
I have finally caught up with review responses. I'm truly sorry for being so abysmal about this guys. Life's been crazy.
Note on chapter length: Again, the chapters are short and that's not going to change. This is partly because I started it for NaNoWriMo, and found that the more I updated the more I wrote, and primarily because I'm writing it for TTH100, which means there will be 100 chapters and there's no way I could do that if each chapter were 5000 words long. Just not gonna happen. So I'm sorry about it, but it's the way it is and it won't change. Plus at this point we haven't yet reached anything that wasn't already written last November, and while I'm doing minor editing, I'm not making dramatic changes. Mostly, at least.
Yo: Thanks! Glad you're liking it.
banduraqueen: Well, not exactly, on the eye;) But it will come clear. Thanks! (on six: ) Yup, I tend to take plots fairly slowly. Sorry! (on 7: ) thanks! I had a lat of fun gradually letting out bits of info, though some think I dragged it on a bit too long *laugh* What can I say-- I'm a fan of slow. (on 8: ) Thanks so much! Since the dialogue is one of my favorite things about the show, I'm delighted to hear that thus far mine is good too. Explanations on Xander's presence will be forthcoming:)
emptyli'lfirefly: *grin* Glad you're liking! And yeah, I'm with you-- it's harsh finding a story you like and not being able to really enjoy it because it's badly written. THanks!
Tangerine-Alert: Thanks-- lemme know if you figure out whey Mal feels off to you. I don't disagree on the shortness, but I had reasons for having short chapters, mainly in that I was writing tth100 (100 chapters/stories on a theme) and sincerely doubt that I could write 100 long chapters on it, and that I was writing first on NaNoWriMo and could keep going better if I posted constantly (which I did on my livejournal). Thanks! (on 9: ) River's tough for me, so I'm glad I got her right in this one! And glad the dream worked (since in this case, 'creepy' is definitely working!) (on 10: ) *laugh* Well, it wasn't intentionally homo-erotic, although I admit to being a slash fan. This particular story is basically gen, though-- just a bit of mention of existing couples. Xander's been around a bit, but not for more than a few months... Glad you're enjoying! (on 11: ) Yup he's staying. River... I try to give her ups and downs, but I admit that I'm better at the psychic angle than the crazy one. I shall, of course, continue to try. And nope-- special wood is on the expensive side, but that's not where Xander's wealth is from! (on 12: ) It's actually less about Xander and more about Zoe. She likes people fine, but doesn't tend to trust them very quickly (at least in my interpretation), and bringing in a new person is stressful. The mule in the movie would have been far less expensive than the disk because it's (relatively) old tech. It uses the traditional types of engine with the fuel consumptions and dangers thereof. The disk, on the other hand, has new tech that lets it go more or less infinitely without any sort of charge, and practically no risk of blowing up or anything like that. Some of the price is for the features, some for the novelty. Thanks much! (on 14: ) Thanks! I don't write fight scenes much, and am hardly an expert, though I've had several years of martial arts lessons. Glad it worked! Zoe is getting rather curious, yeah-- as for Xander stopping-- he doesn't know whether River spoke out loud or not. Technically, I'm not sure either *laugh* Thanks much! (on 15: ) Nope, not yet-- but he will! (on 16: ) Glad you liked it! This is actually one of my favorite chapters, just how it came out really pleased me. And yup: I'm planning on a friendship for them that's a lot like his friendship with Willow-- but it's probably just as well that it's based on new things. Better that he's not trying to replace an old friend but to make a new. Thanks again! (on 18: ) Thanks! And yeah, he probably will at some point. He just so far has just made the one thing, and wanted that to be here. Cargo hold is one set of steps, but from what I saw on the maps of the ship I looked at, the dining room is basically right there after it. The shuttles' positions I had a harder time finding, but it looked more awkward going from there. Who knows.
J-Kid: Thanks, glad you're enjoying it! And I was rather pleased with how the bit about Xander's world having been destroyed came out *grin* Glad it worked for you, too. More does, indeed, get explained later on. Thanks for the review! (on five:) *laugh* Glad my River's working for you. She's extremely hard to get right, and I think maybe I'm making her a trifle too sane-- but it is post series (tho pre-movie) and she did seem to get a little better at the end... Or at least it seemed like she could, I guess, since the last episode had her 'becoming' Serenity. Glad you liked the Mal/Xander interaction-- I felt kinda guilty about it, since it seemed a bit like a cheap trick but... it was fun *laugh* Thanks much! (on six:) Yeah, Xander and Jayne are a lot alike in a lot of ways. Yeah, Inara's probably my least favorite of the crew-- which still leaves me room to like her pretty well, she just doesn't feel as interesting as the rest. But she will show up eventually. Thanks again!
dollsom: *grin* Thanks! Glad you're enjoying. (on 6: ) Yup, there has been (and will be) significantly more. I'm pleased that Xander's right (at least given the circumstances). Thanks!
Luna: Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Shadowed Echo: Thanks!
JitterBug: I actually kinda avoided getting into Buffy for a long time. I loved the movie but wouldn't watch the show. I finally gave in, of course, and enjoyed it lots-- though I like Firefly better:p Thanks for the review!
gaul1: Thanks!
enchantedlight: Thank you!
JennMel: *grin* Glad you're enjoying! (on 11: ) Glad you liked the Shrek reference *laugh* They amuse me to toss in. (on 12: ) *grin* Not for a while yet, I fear. (on 13: ) That he is! Or did, since I've been abominable about getting review responses out:p Glad the banter worked! (on 14: ) Thanks! And nah, Simon's a bit of a dope when it comes to Kaylee, but he's not going to go bad. And I'm actually not going down the Xander/Kaylee romance route, which should help:)
Ant Crown: Yep, pretty much exactly:)
Lanhar: Thanks, glad you're liking it! How he got there is coming, although I think it's not yet up at ffn yet.
DragonStar: Thanks so much! (on 8:) Shepherd Book is alive and well. But if you recall he left the ship at the end of the series and was not on it at the start of the movie-- this takes place during that period where he's on Haven. We will be seeing him later on, however! (on 11: ) Yup, I see her as giving him a little dose of home every now and then *laugh* (on 12: ) Yeah, I love Zoe, too. And she's not really paranoid-- it's just that everyone always seems to be out to get them *laugh* (on 16: ) Yeah, I find the dynamic between them fascinating. War Stories was amongst my favorite episodes, for that reason. (on 18: ) Yeah, Zoe tends towards distrust. Mal tends towards not admitting trust *laugh*
DerektheRogue: Yay! Beginnings and endings tend to be tough for me, so glad when I get one right. Thanks for both the review and the compliments therein!
XinnLajgin: *laugh* Glad I pegged him! (on 7: ) I don't know that Xander knows how not to try and help *laugh* For the rest-- it will come out in time:) (on 8: ) Ah, but the confusion wasn't on how he'd lost the eye, but on why it didn't match the old when when grown back! (on 9: ) Oh good-- the dream had the right effect *grin* (on 13: ) Well, I'm afraid not in my story-- it's gen, only some mention of canon couples-- but I give you free reign to believe it happens later:) (on 14: ) Well, I wouldn't say she's going to get suspicious again. More like, get more suspicious *laugh* But it'll work out! (on 16: ) Yeah, Mal's not entirely happy with him just at the moment... (on 17: ) Yeah. He can be a bit of a dope sometimes. (on 18: ) To quote another movie I like: "Somethin' ... Nothin' ... Hell, I dunno." Which isn't actually true, since I do know what's gonna screw things up, but that's not the point:p
japanese-jew: Thanks! (on 17: ) Yep-- Xander figured he'd like that story *grin* And that quote does seem to society in the time of Firefly *laugh*
tdk99992000: *laugh* Thanks:)
...: Thanks!
dedanaan: I've read a couple others with Xander by now, I think, but they do seem to be sadly rare. Hope my interactions live up to expectation!
Rebel Goddess: *grin* Well I strongly recommend watching Firefly as well as Serenity (if you haven't yet) because it's one of the best-written shows it's been my pleasure to see. Of course, I don't watch much TV (at all), but even so. Glad you're enjoying! (on 7: ) Glad the Xander/everyone else interactions are continuing to work! (on 8: ) Yeah, I had fun with River being a bit on the psychic side, if you couldn't tell *laugh* Thanks again! (on 9: ) Yeah, I figure Mal knows River pretty well by now *laugh* Glad you liked it! (on 10: ) *laugh* Nothing's can ever be simple for Xander. There was probably a time when he would have liked being mysterious-- funny how that changes when you have actual secrets... (on 11: ) Yeah, and having Xander freak about another crew member would be bad. *laugh* Plus Jasmine freaked me out way more than Caleb did-- although, of course, it wasn't my eye. Glad you liked the ogre line! Thanks again! (on 12: ) Yup more or less *laugh* More details about the money will come out later on. Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, Serenity several times over would probably not make a very noticeable dent in his account. (on 13: ) Thanks! I like pulling in various bits from the past-- always glad when they work. (on 14: ) Yay! Glad it worked. Poor Simon is a bit of a dunce sometimes:p (on 15: ) Yeah, ffn occasionally freaks out. Glad you enjoyed! (on 16: ) Yeah, but if he didn't act like a dolt they wouldn't enjoy it so much *laugh* Poor Simon-- he just is really clueless when it comes to things that aren't medicine and society. (on 17: ) Yeah, Xander's never satisfied with his girls' suitors. Plus Simon made Kaylee cry last night, so he's not really in Xader's good books right now *laugh* Glad you enjoyed! (on 18: ) Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Allen Pitt: Yup, no Chinese for Xander-- yet, at least. Ooh, I'd forgotten about his lucky nickel. Maybe I'll bring that up. Thanks for the review! (on 8: ) Ah, but he's not exactly an artifact... well, it'll be explained in time! (on 9:) Yep, clues continue, although the real truth doesn't come out for a bit yet! He's been here a little while, though, so he knows some of the things that are different. He won't make too many mistakes, but language has definitely drifted. And yes, there is an honest-to-god plot coming. I'm just getting to it gradually *laugh* (on 10:) Yeah, there's a lot Xander doesn't know, but he has been around some, so he's not too likely to freak about common things-- particularly with how good he is by now of expecting the unexpected. (on 11: ) Ah, the wonders of compound interest... The money will be explained when the rest of Xander's history is, I promise! I don't think carbon dating would show anything due to how he was frozen in time. It wasn't exactly the same way River was. Still a bit before they know. (on 12: ) *grin* Yep, money is not a huge problem for him just at the moment. And yeah, in some ways it's easier to slip up when the changes are more subtle-- though on the other hand it's also easier to claim that where you lived there was just a slightly different dialect... Thanks! (on 13: ) Well, he kind of is from the core... he was there more recently than anywhere else... *laugh* AH well-- the truth will come out in time. (on 15: ) Well, except that there's various parts of core worlds-- I mean there's the whole blackout zone thing, but also I expect they have various groups that are different than the majority. Not everyone from the core is the Simon type, after all! And he wasn't exactly in cryo... (on 16: ) Simon can be a bit of a pill. But he'll be okay:p (on 16: ) Yeah, I agree-- it's surprising that there hasn't been more lingual drift than there has been (I expect it's primarily due to wanting them to be comprehensible to a 20th century audience *laugh*) And I agree that he has a strange knowledge base-- but from what I've seen a lot of people only know current events of their own community and not much else-- but I am definitely trying to keep his language patterns separate from theirs-- at least until they can start drifting together naturally. His knowledge about Earth-that-was hasn't come up much because they just never really talk about it. He's not gonna bring it up, and why would they? Thanks again and I'll try to keep aware of what he would and wouldn't know!
Slinky-and-the-BloodyWands: Do! Hope you continue to enjoy! (on 2: ) Yeah, that he is.
FairyQilan: Glad to hear it.
Dr Gero: Thanks! It often seems to me that it's the details that make a story suck you in, so I'm delighted to hear that mine are working. I'm glad that the update notification thingie got working-- and that you're enjoying the story, of course! (on 10: ) Thanks so much, I'm glad you're enjoying it enough to catch each one immediately! (on 12: ) Yeah, it's hard getting the various speech patterns right. My big thing is to try not to make the accent too heavy, because it always seems heavier in text than speech, so a little exaggeration goes way too far *laugh* Hehe-- the money will be explained:) (on 16: ) Thank you! It was one of my favorites, and one of the ones that made me decide not to give up on tth100, cuz if it hadn't been for the prompt, this chapter would never have been born *laugh* As for what they were talking about-- your idea is as good as mine, I fear. I didn't actually come up with a conversation. Thanks so much for the compliments! I never get sick of 'em *grin*
ApocSM: Thanks so much, I'm glad you're enjoying!
Dracowar: Glad you're enjoying! See the note at the top of this post for questions on chapter length.
Tangerine-Alert: There will be many a talk betwixt Xander and River-- though thus far he hasn't directly confronted her about what she does and doesn't know. Glad you liked the eye bit!
Ryudo: Thanks!
ralyks: Glad to hear it! Thanks! (on 18: ) Thanks, I'm thrilled to hear it! Update should be up shortly.
Evilclone: Thank you! And there has been and will continue to be more, of course:) (on 14: ) Hmm... I don't want to give anything away. (on 16: ) Yeah, making Kaylee cry is almost never a good idea. (on 19: ) Aww, you think Mal wouldn't like having embarrassing stories told about him? *laugh* Prolly not, but at the same point it takes an awful lot to embarrass him, so he might not care. Hard to say.
workaholic: Hehe-- hope I don't occupy you too much at work! Glad you're enjoying it and that I have the characterizations so far. Thanks for the review!
Marz1: The Caleb/Mal thing was just a fluke (unless I come up with something better at some point). I actually felt kind of guilty capitalizing on actors, but the scene was just too much fun not to write:p And yup, there will be demons. Thanks! (on 12: ) *laugh* Yup, I thought it'd be fun. Hope it lived up to expectation! (on 14: ) Glad you enjoyed! As for bad guys-- they'll be coming. But I'm not a terribly action-oriented writer... (on 16: ) Glad you enjoyed-- but again, not a lot of fights. They'll be in here, but definitely a bit sparse. Sorry.
UNTALENTEDTKK: Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked my pacing. I know some people want me to get on with the story, but I do tend to take things rather gradually. I agree with you on River-- on the psychi---insane continuum I have her a little to far over on the purely psychic end. I'm working on it! Thanks for the feedback and glad you're enjoying!
Miss Teinge: Yeah, this one's faster mostly because the first 29 chapters were written by the end of last November so I'm just editing to post rather than actually writing. But I promise, I haven't abandoned Catechism or The Only Thing! Glad you gave this one a try, though, and that you're enjoying it!
SisterDear previously SachiAmi: *laugh* Yeah, the crossover community is an interesting place. There are some fantastic stories, but crossovers also seem to draw people who think novelty trumps grammar. *grin* Yeah, I love how if they actually listened to River they'd pretty much know the truth in no time. I expect she'll have an 'I told you so' at some point. Thanks much and I'm glad you're enjoying!
Dragonsdaughter1: Thank you!
KeeperoftheSnoopyDance: Thanks so much! Glad you're enjoying it!
Slinky-and-the-BloodyWands: Do! Hope you enjoy. (on 4: ) Glad you liked! And I always love hearing what lines particularly work, so thanks for that! (on 5: ) Yeah, but Xander has never really been the run-and-hide type-- though he says he is all the time. (on 6: ) Aren't they? Thanks. And hey, what's a little redundancy among friends? (on 7: ) Yeah, language slips:( Poor Xander. (on 8:) *grin* Yeah, well-- what else is new, right? (on 9: ) Yeah, River gets a lot-- sometimes more than others, but generally too much *laugh* (on 10: ) Well, 'soon' is one of those relative words... (on 11: ) Yeah, money is a thing for Xander. (on 12: ) Thanks-- hope it lived up to expectation. (on 16: ) Yep, he's there *laugh* He'll be okay, though. (on 17: ) *laugh* Thanks! Glad it worked! (on 18: ) *grin* Yeah, my table's okay, but my desk... Ah well. Glad you liked! (on 19: ) Glad you're continuing to enjoy!
walkingbreeze: Thanks, I'm really glad you're enjoying it! (on 14: ) Hmm... I'll look at the beginning again and see if I can't smooth it out. Glad it got better as it went, though! Thanks much. And, nope-- pure gen. Only mention of canon couples.
speaker4thesilent: Thanks, glad you're enjoying it!
Mistress of the Knight: Yay! Glad to hear that I'm managing. The major plot development is not quite yet, but it is coming. Sorry if I'm taking it too slowly for you-- it's in part due to writing for tth100, which means at least 100 chapters. Encourages my natural leisurely writing style even more. (on 16: ) Yeah, badness will come. Nothing stays good forever-- especially, as you said, in Joss-shows. Thanks!
MarbleGlove: Believe me, I'm not likely to forget you *laugh* You've been immensely helpful on your comments on my lj. And, yup-- rapidly catching up to that one. Which, sadly, has less to do with posting fast here and more with posting slowly there. And I am, indeed, hoping to get 34 up before too long-- life's just been crazy:( Thanks for stopping by here!
spikes-storm: Thanks!
Luki Dimension: Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying it! And answers to those questions will come out, I promise.
King Henry the V: The thing of it is that I'm editing before posting, so I can't just toss them all up. At least, I could, but then they'd still be in the same condition as the previous versions, and I prefer to squeeze out a few more typos or neaten up a few sentences... However, you are welcome to check out the less-edited versions. Up through chapter thirty-three (including 2 extremely different versions of 26-29) are available on my other journal at http://dreamfall-nnwm.livejournal.com/ , and an in-between edition is available through chapter 31 at http://www.tthfanfic.com/authors.ph p?no=4931. For me, weekly updates are pretty darn miraculous actually *laugh* So I've been doing pretty well here. Glad you're enjoying!
gbvjgv: Will do-- thanks!
anonymous: That it doesn't. And Xander's not known for things going as planned around him either *laugh* Thanks!
Chrizz: Thanks!
Verse Chorus Verse: All my posted WiPs will be finished. Promise. Glad you're enjoying!
Leanne17: Glad you're liking it, and I will!
emma: Thanks!

Up through chapter thirty-three (including 2 extremely different versions of 26-29) are available on my other journal at http://dreamfall-nnwm.livejournal.com/
gbvjgv: Will do-- thanks!
anonymous: That it doesn't.
